CDC RECOGNIZES WELLONE

November 14th, 2017

November 2017 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today the winners of the 2017 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge. WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care, a federally-qualified health center with offices in Pascoag, Foster, Scituate and North Kingstown, was one of 24 Champions in the country to achieve high rates of blood pressure control. WellOne, provides primary medical, dental and behavioral health services to more than 16,000 Rhode Islanders each year.

According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 3 American adults has high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. Nearly half of adults with high blood pressure do not have their condition under control. Even more alarming, millions of Americans have high blood pressure that is undiagnosed or untreated.

WellOne, the only medical practice in Rhode Island recognized for this achievement, focused on proven strategies to help their patients achieve blood pressure control at rates at or above the Million Hearts® target of 70 percent. To be eligible, WellOne shared verifiable high blood pressure control data on its patients and highlighted successful strategies and best practices such as the use of health information technology and team-based care.

“WellOne’s providers work diligently to provide quality primary and preventive care to their patients,” stated Andrea Marcotte, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for WellOne. “Through the use of key quality improvement practices, WellOne is making great strides in not only hypertension, but in diabetes control, colorectal screening and childhood immunizations. Our emphasis is on health and wellness in addition to treatment which makes these chronic diseases a focus of our care.”

Last year, over 3,000 WellOne patients were diagnosed with hypertension resulting in more than 9,000 visits at their four locations.
