FOSTER RESIDENT NAMED RURAL HEALTH CHAMPION

December 1st, 2014

Laila Bennett, the Office Manager for WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care’s Foster facility, was presented the 2014 Rural Health Champion Award by the Rhode Island Department of Health’s (HEALTH) Director, Michael Fine, MD, at a recent celebration of National Rural Health Day held at the State House. The award is presented annually by Department of Health’s Office of Primary Care and Rural Health to individuals who demonstrate a commitment and passion for supporting individuals living in medically underserved populations.

Ms. Bennett has been assisting individuals from Foster and surrounding communities with their medical and dental needs for 23 years. WellOne’s Foster office is the only provider of primary care for the towns of Foster, southern Glocester, western Scituate and parts of Coventry.

Her reign in Foster began in 1991 when she began working for Spencer Family Practice as their Receptionist, Billing Specialist and lastly, Office Manager. In 2008, WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care acquired the former Spencer Family Practice and Bennett was re-hired as WellOne’s Office Manager, the position she currently holds.

Peter Bancroft, President and CEO of WellOne, describes Ms. Bennett “as a true patient-care advocate.” “Laila treats patients like family. She goes above and beyond the duties of her position, often going out of her way to help someone. Our patients are very appreciative of her helpfulness and kindness.”

“A lot has changed since I began working in Community Health,” states Bennett. “But one thing remains the same, its mission – to provide affordable, accessible high-quality healthcare to all.”

Ms. Bennett has resided in Foster for the past 58 years.
